Descriptions of ServeNebraska's Trainings:

Strategic Planning (Coordinated by the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands):

This class will focus on the process that uses baseline information to determine the necessary strategies, objectives, action items, and specific responsibilities, required to achieve the organization's business goals, as well as a way to chart progress towards those goals. The instructor for this class is Cec Farnsworth. Cec is President of Trainco Associates an organization that specializes in providing consulting, training and research to organizations in the areas of Quality Improvement, Employee Involvement, Management Development, Creating High Performance Teams, Customer Service, Personal Development and Management Information Systems. Prior to founding Trainco Associates, Cec was manager of Data Processing Training for Mutual of Omaha where she received the ASTD creative training award for her work in Management Development Training.

Grant Writing 101 for Dummies (Coordinated by the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands)

This session is designed to give volunteers, board members, program staff, and others a detailed overview of how to research and write winning corporate and foundation grant proposals. Supportive instruction includes: How to find grant funding opportunities; how to write multiple types of grant request formats; how to craft a winning proposal narrative; what funders want to fund; in-kind and direct costs in your budget—what do they mean; why grant proposals are rejected; follow-up expectations from funders, and 40 tips to winning a phenomenal grant award.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to locate information on corporate and foundation grant makers.
  • Understand how to match funders’ priorities to your specific community project needs.
  • Understand how to write a corporate letter request.
  • Understand how to write a Common Grant Application award winning narrative.
  • Understand the type of follow-up accountability practices expected of all grantees.

Capacity Building Conference (Coordinated by Region 5 Systems)

This one-day conference will provide participants with a variety of tools and resources to build capacity at their organizations. Workshops and presentations will cover topics ranging from marketing and communication, to board development and surveying. The conference also includes a morning plenary session called “Developing and Implementing Cultivation Strategies for Major Gift Donors”, presented by William “Bill” Sturtevant, Senior Vice President for Principal Gifts at the University of Illinois Foundation.

Searching for Funding Online (coordinated by the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands)

You’ll be wowed by what your very own Omaha Public Library has to offer. Be sure to sign up for these sessions (limited seating in computer training labs) to learn more about using databases that are certain to be useful to your nonprofit organization. Featured will be the Foundation Center Database, Reference USA, and Proquest Newsstand. You will also learn savvy Internet searching techniques.

Religious Diversity & Public Service:

The population of Nebraska continues to diversify religiously and religion is central to how many individuals understand themselves, their community and the world. Issues of religion and religious diversity often are inadequately addressed or ignored in the broad cultural competency training many professionals receive. This session will give participants an opportunity to examine their own attitudes and identities as they relate to religion/spirituality and will touch on the knowledge and skills with which professionals need to be equipped to effectively work with and serve religiously-diverse populations.

Project Management Crash Course for Beginners

A hands-on introduction to project management providing the principles of project management from identification of project requirements and creation of the scope statement through building a network diagram and creating a detailed project plan. Students will gain an understanding of project management principles to plan a project from gathering requirements to establishing the project plan. Presenter Nancy Martinez has 15 years of project management experience from non-profit community and government projects to private sector information technology projects. Martinez's diverse background allows her workshop to provide an understanding of project management across multiple disciplines. Martinez has her master's degree in Project Management from The George Washington University and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP)

Survival Kit for Successful Volunteer Management

This interactive and humorous presentation will provide a general overview of and practical tips for success in volunteer management. The facilitator, Nancy Wilson, Executive Director of CASA for Douglas County of 11 years, will share both her positive and negative experiences in this arena. Participants will discover strategies to effectively recruit, screen, train, manage and retain volunteers in their organizations.

Basic Disaster Life Support

Basic Disaster Life SupportTM (BDLSTM) courses bring together people from multiple disciplines in order to create a common approach to and language of disaster response. The result is an all-hazards approach (recognition and management) to disaster response.

  • The 8-hour course covers:
  • The DISASTER Paradigm
  • Natural and manmade disasters
  • Traumatic and explosive events
  • Nuclear and radiological weapon attacks
  • Biological events
  • Chemical events
  • Public health system
  • Psychosocial aspects of disasters

Completing the course and passing a competency exam leads to Certification in BDLSTM. Maintaining the certification requires renewal training every three years.

Nonprofit Guide to Social Networking Sites

In this workshop, participants will generate a list of “verbs” that further their organization’s communication goals and then learn about the respective strengths and weaknesses of specific “nouns” (social media tools) that can help them meet those goals. We will review some current examples in the non-profit world and critique their social media profiles. With an understanding of goals, tools, and examples, participants will team up and pick a specific social media tool (Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc.) to explore. They will login, create a private profile or group to test out some of the features and then develop one specific action item that each will take back to his or her organization.

Dan Gilbert is a learning and technology consultant specializing in leveraging technology for supporting face-to-face interactions. Prior to coming to Omaha in 2008, Dan was an academic technology specialist at the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning and a Lecturer in Stanford’s School of Education. He worked with faculty to design, carry out, and evaluate learning activities in the experimental spaces and created and taught Designing Learning Spaces at Stanford. He consults with learning organizations around the world on designing new learning spaces and has also evaluated programs at a children’s museum, worked for high-tech start-ups and taught English in the US and Japan. Dan holds a Master’s Degree in Learning, Design and Technology from Stanford.

Program Planning & Evaluation: Omaha

Choosing evaluation tools can be accomplished by asking a series of questions to make a decision between the two most common types of evaluation tools: the survey and the interview. Various phases of a program can require different approaches. The workshop will help you determine which tool to use and when to use it. Guidance will be given on developing essential questions that will connect to your evaluation to overall program goals and objectives.

Marty Skomal, director of programs at the Nebraska Arts Council, will show you how to create a simple logic model to help you develop a succinct program and evaluation plan. This workshop is designed to make programs more successful and improve knowledge and skills as a program evaluator.

How to Make a Donor Call: Omaha

Participants in this workshop will learn the techniques for successful donor solicitation and how to get the desired response without fear of rejection. It will cover preparation for the solicitation; how to avoid major errors; the steps of the ask process and appropriate follow-up. Participants also have the opportunity to engage in small group role-playing exercises to practice their new skills.

Jodie Nolan, CFRE, Vice President of Gift Planning Services with Paul J. Strawhecker, Inc. has more than 20 years of development experience associated primarily with child welfare organizations, higher education and healthcare institutions. Most recently, she served as National Director of Major Gifts/Planned Giving for Father Flanagan's Boys Home (Girls and Boys Town), and previously served in positions such as Vice President, Institutional Advancement for the College of St. Mary (Omaha NE); Director of Development, Child Saving Institute (Omaha NE); and the St. Joseph Health Care Foundation (Omaha NE). Ms. Nolan's experience includes working with national organizations and being responsible for subsidiary offices in various locations. Jodie has experience in all areas of fund raising including annual giving, planned giving, capital campaigns and major gifts. Jodie has in depth knowledge and ability to work with individuals who have made major charitable gifts, either outright or deferred. Many of these gifts were $1 million and over. She also has knowledge concerning the various planned giving vehicles and works with clients on understanding major gifts and deferred giving, and has been noted in national presentations on how to establish a major gift program. Jodie serves on various boards both nationally and locally.

She holds degrees in Organizational Development, Public Administration, and Business Administration. Dr. Browning is the author of over two dozen grants-related publications, including Grant Writing For Dummies, Grant Writing for Educators, How to Become a Grant Writing Consultant, Faith-Based Grants: Aligning Your Church to Receive Abundance , and Winning Strategies for Developing Grant Proposal as well as her newest book, Perfect Phrases for Writing Grant Proposals.
