More Than Prairie: How AmeriCorps Members Are Strengthening Environmental Stewardship in Nebraska

When people think of Nebraska, they think of prairie. But our state’s environment is far more diverse — rivers, wetlands, urban parks, wildlife habitats and the communities that depend on them.

Protecting those spaces takes more than good intentions. It takes people.

Through Conservation Nebraska’s AmeriCorps program, members serve across the state to lead environmental education, organize volunteers, and connect communities to conservation resources. Their work includes outreach, community events, partnership building, and hands-on efforts that strengthen local environmental initiatives.

This is a practical, community-centered service; not abstract advocacy.

Member Spotlight: Caitlyn

For Caitlyn, serving with AmeriCorps has been about connection.

“In one sentence, the critical need we’re addressing is environmental education,” she explains. “People can’t protect what they don’t understand.”

On a day-to-day basis, Caitlyn focuses on outreach: connecting with residents, organizing events, and helping expand access to conservation resources. Whether that’s canvassing, making calls, or building relationships with community partners, her work centers on meeting people where they are.

She’s seen firsthand how knowledge changes perspective.

“One real result I’ve seen is a shift in outlook,” she says. “When people understand how environmental issues impact their own community, they’re more willing to get involved.” For Caitlyn, service has also been a form of personal growth.

“I’ve loved it — the people, the experience, the opportunity to work in places like Lincoln parks and with partners across the state. It’s meaningful work.”

Because of AmeriCorps members like Caitlyn, communities across Nebraska are more informed, more connected, and better prepared to protect our environmental diversity.

Environmental stewardship doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people choose to step up.
