Who We Are

Mission & History

What is ServeNebraska?

ServeNebraska is the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission. We coordinate community involvement by fellow Nebraskans to address the needs of our communities, and support community members in their volunteer efforts. ServeNebraska coordinates AmeriCorps programming, which celebrates volunteer achievements through annual awards, provides training and technical assistance for AmeriCorps programming, and works to ensure that those with disabilities have the opportunity to be fully involved.

Mission

Mobilizing Nebraskans to strengthen their communities through volunteering, collaboration, and national service programs.

Our Values

Underlying organizational values define the attitude of ServeNebraska in implementing its mission and serving our state.  Our core values in guiding us include:

  • Communication - Build and maintain relationships.
  • Integrity - Do the right thing, practice good stewardship and model and require compliance.
  • Inclusion - Reach out, invite and collaborate across the state.
  • Excellence - Embrace high standards, appropriate action and results.

Our History

In 1994, Governor Ben Nelson signed an Executive Order 94-5 which established the Nebraska Commission for National and Community Service. This was in accordance with the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. The Commission's name has changed twice since then - to the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission in 1999, and to ServeNebraska in 2008. The ServeNebraska Commission is comprised of up to 25 voting volunteer members, who are appointed by the Governor. This creates a commission of non-partisan, diverse citizens who reflect Nebraska’s unique identity..
