Every Nebraska community is brighter because someone works to improve it.
They avoid the spotlight, never keep score, and always show up to help. Their goal: a stronger Nebraska, one act at a time.
Across Nebraska, volunteers mentor, lead drives, rebuild after disasters, support veterans, and strengthen communities — often without recognition.
This commitment is why the Step Forward Awards exist.
What Are the Step Forward Awards?
ServeNebraska gives the Step Forward Awards — Nebraska’s top volunteer honor — to those who give their time, energy, and heart.
Nominate individuals or groups making a difference. A panel reviews based on impact and commitment. Governor Jim Pillen selects honorees who are recognized at an October luncheon. ServeNebraska notifies winners and nominators in advance.
Who Can Be Nominated?
Nominate anyone making a difference through service, including first-timers and past honorees still serving others.
Nominations are open statewide and include:
- Individuals of all ages
- Volunteer groups
- People connected to schools, nonprofits, businesses or community groups.
If someone strengthens their community, nominate them here.
Award Categories
The Step Forward Awards recognize a wide range of service, including:
- Youth, Adult, Senior, Volunteer Group, Corporate, National Service, Veteran, Disaster, Lifetime Achievement.
Each category highlights a unique impact. Every nominee exceeds expectations.
Why This Matters
Recognition is more than celebration — it’s about visibility.
When we highlight the people doing the work, we:
- Reinforce what strong communities look like
- Encourage others to get involved.
- Show that service matters.
Governor Jim Pillen says volunteers are Nebraska’s heartbeat. Help make their efforts visible.
